Some Ithaca College students were forced from their building following a dorm room fire that broke out early Thursday on the 10th floor of East Tower.

"I was like, 'this is just another typical fire drill. They’ll be out here for like 5 minutes and then we’ll go back in,' but then it turned into nine hours," said freshman Nate Hansen.

The fire was caused by a hot plate -- one of many things on the school's restricted list. Other items on the restricted list include halogen lamps, extension cords and  toasters.

“Just not sure how he thought he could have the hot plate, because we know we stress that one quite a bit," said Office of Environmental Health and Safety Manager Tim Ryan.

The buildings are inspected at least four times each by numerous organizations, which include the school's residential life department, and the State Fire and Prevention and Control department does another inspection. No one was hurt this time, but officials stressed caution.

"Use this as an example of why we don’t allow hot plates on campus," Ryan said.
