The former Syracuse firefighter charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run is apparently looking to get his job back. The mother of the teen killed is fighting to keep that from happening.

City officials confirm that Ted Ackerman has contested his firing, and is currently in arbitration.

He was let go from the Syracuse fire Department shortly after the crash that killed 18-year-old Seth Collier in March of 2017.

According to sources, Ackerman was driving behind the vehicle that struck Collier that night. He then allegedly tried to hide surveillance video of the crash at Pastime Athletic Club, where he was president.

Ackerman is facing a felony count of tampering with physical evidence.

Syracuse Director of Personnel Robert Stamey made a statement about his efforts to be reinstated at the fire department. He says:

"The city is defending and will work to uphold its termination of Mr. Ackerman in 2017. Because the matter is in arbitration, the city is not in a position to say more at this time."

The victim's mother is also fighting to keep Ackerman from being reinstated.  She has created a petition on change.org -- trying to get 2,500 signatures to be delivered to the city of Syracuse demanding that his termination be upheld.
