SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Two people were taken to the hospital after escaping a house fire on the far Westside of Syracuse Tuesday morning.

Firefighters arrived on Erie Street around 5:30 a.m., just as the residents were exiting the burning home.

They say there were heavy flames coming from the second floor, where the people lived.

A first floor apartment was unoccupied. The victims were both treated for smoke inhalation. The firefighters were cold, but not injured.

Three adults lived in the building. They are not expected to be able to return home, due to the extent of the damage.
