CICERO, N.Y. -- Just a few days after the thermometer soared to 60 in Central New York, some people are back on the ice.

Ice fishermen were out on Oneida Lake Monday. After a couple of mornings of sub-zero temperatures, they say the ice was at least a foot thick again.

According to the DEC, a minimum of three to four inches of solid ice is the general rule for ice fishing on new, clear ice.

Although some anglers say they had to move a few times, they were able to get a few bites. They shared advice for people out on the ice, like taking it slow and using common sense.

"Right now it's been so cold for so long. Like I said, there's a foot of ice on the lake. Stay away from slushy areas around the pressure cracks,” said Kirkfield resident Eric Wisniewski. “I think last week, a guy down in Bridgeport probably got stuck in a pressure crack."

The Crappie Derby, an ice fishing competition in Whitney Point, has been canceled the past two years because the ice hasn't been thick enough. But anglers think this year looks promising. The event is scheduled for February 17.
