In an effort to make their community healthier, Oneida County is now prohibiting the use of all tobacco products around their buildings.

As of January 1, the new local law, which was passed in 2016, finally took effect. It bans the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco on all properties owned or leased by the county.

Up to this point, the county had designated smoking areas outside their buildings. Those have been removed.

County officials say they hope this step will deter employees and the public from using tobacco products.

"We're trying to make a healthier community and this is one of those laws that really does benefit everyone and it benefits not only our generation, the current people in this community, but future generations, if we can reduce the effects of smoking and the addiction of smoking from more and more people," said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.

Violators will first be given a warning and educated on the new law by sheriff's deputies. Those who refuse to abide by the law will be arrested, given an appearance ticket and fined up to $1,000.
