ITHACA, N.Y. -- The city of Ithaca joins the list of municipalities seeking legal action against opioid manufacturers.

Ithaca is now one of several cities suing opioid manufacturers for the growing epidemic and the financial toll of taxpayers.

According the lawmakers, opioids have been marketed in a way that promotes addition and they want to protect their community.

"We want to regroup the losses that we have as a community from all the overtime generated from our police to the fire departments to overdose response, to the pain and suffering caused by this epidemic,” said Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick.

The common council voted unanimously to retain a lawyer and start the filing process.
