SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- The frigid weather we've been experiencing could be wreaking havoc on your pipes.

Experts say to turn up your heat, because pipes can freeze and burst at 32 degrees. The more wind getting in, the quicker those pipes will freeze. To keep the wind out, stuffing blankets or mats into doorways is recommended. It's also a good idea to buy pipe wrap for excessive cold in basements or walls.

"You can buy it almost anywhere. Buy the right size -- [three-quarters of an inch], 1 inch, put it on the pipe," said John Wylie of DBR Plumbing. "It will help pipes from freezing. It will not stop it if it gets that cold for an extended period of time."

Overall, experts say to be careful and use common sense. In the event of a frozen pipe, know the location of your valves and contact a plumber.
