TULLY, N.Y. -- Emergency crews spent 90 minutes trying to free the driver of a propane truck who went off the road Monday morning, while driving on Interstate 81 near Tully.

The truck ended up pinned to the side of a tree. Firefighters actually had to cut the tree down to get to the man, who had his legs crushed by the dashboard.

Crews also had to take extra precautions due to the flammable liquids on board.

"As you can see, there's a hose line pulled, in addition we use our noses obviously, and then I have a gas meter. I made frequent 360 degree inspections around the truck.  Had there been an explosive concentration of gas, the gas meter would have triggered and we would have evacuated until we could have slowed the gas,” said Tully Fire Chief Steven Shahan.

The driver did have serious injuries to his lower extremities, but was taken to the hospital for treatment. The fire chief said it wasn't immediately clear why he went off the road.
