UTICA, N.Y. - Local educators are among those expressing their frustrations with the tax reform plan.
Officials say it could cost teachers hundreds of dollars because it will eliminate a tax deduction for purchasing their own classroom supplies.
Utica Teachers Association President Cherie Grant said some teachers spend more than $1,000 a year, making it a valuable asset.
"It's unfortunate that the GOP side of the politics really is taking advantage of the generosity of education professionals," Grant said. "We do that because we care about the children who come into our classrooms, not because we're going to get a deduction on the other end."
Edcuation advocates said more than 200,000 teachers would be affected in Upstate New York.
Spectrum News also reached out to Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. She voted for the plan, and will be challenged by Brindisi for the congressional seat in the next election.
Claudia Tenney for Congress spokeswoman Raychel Renna said:
"Day after day, liberal Anthony Brindisi embarrasses himself with a new false attack to distract from his ugly record of rubberstamping higher taxes and the corrupt failed policies of Governor Cuomo.
New York has among the highest tax burdens in the nation. When Brindisi complains about New York’s tax burden he is complaining about his own high tax Albany policies which punish teachers and all middle income New Yorkers.”
