SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Some Syracuse educators are helping students learn English as a second language.

Therese Driscoll, a speech therapist turned stay at home mom, decided she wanted to go back to helping others once her kids got older.

Driscoll teamed up with the White Branch Library in Syracuse to start an after school program helping E.S.L students with homework.

The group also realized not all students have computers at home, so they offer access to the technology.

Driscoll brought retired teachers on board to volunteer their time and they now tutor the children after school every day for two hours.

"They are absolutely wonderful. They come from all over the world. They are warm, polite, friendly and they love to get to know the other kids here,” said Driscoll. “It's just really a joy to have them here."

She says the children like to put their home country on a map at the library to show where they are from. More than 25 languages are spoken in the group.
