FULTON, N.Y. -- Firefighters Floyd Adel and Leon Hammond, who each died more than 100 years ago, were honored Friday in Fulton.

In December 1914, Adel was killed while helping to install a new fire alarm box for the Nestle Food Company. His leg came in contact with a 2,300-volt wire and he died instantly.

One year later, Hammond was battling a freight house building fire. Blocks from the wall of the house gave way and Hammond was buried underneath.

"It's 102 and 103 respectively years ago that they gave their lives, both in different incidents, but nevertheless made the ultimate sacrifice," said Fulton Fire Chief David Eiffe. "It's important to me as chief that we recognize these gentlemen and the sacrifices they've made as a department to remember them and honor them for what they did."

A wreath was placed in remembrance. Adel and Hammond are also honored on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Albany.
