ROME, N.Y. -- The Rome Police Department is getting a major boost from the state.

Senator Joseph Griffo and city leaders announced $275,000 in state funding for the purchase of a much-needed new mobile command center.

It will be used as a satellite police station and as a command post at crime scenes and firefighting operations. The new unit will have several features, including a boom on the back with two cameras.

It's replacing the department's current command center which members said is outdated and needs major repairs.

Police Chief Kevin Beach said the unit is something the department has wanted for years.

"Fortunately, we've come to today, to where apparently this has been approved, and hopefully in the next calendar year, we should have a new command unit," Beach said.

He noted a few other things still have to be approved, but the chief hopes to have the mobile command center about 10 months after approval.
