Rayden LaBarge, 11, died Saturday at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

"It's a very sad, sad case. He was a bright, energetic child who had a great future that was cut tragically short," said St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood.

Wood says LaBarge's mother took him to a medical facility Thursday for flu-like symptoms, and then found him unresponsive in his room Saturday.

"We're not calling it the flu. We're not calling it anything until all the test results get back," said Wood.

According to his obituary, LaBarge was a student of the Potsdam Central School district. He is described as a boy with a "bright spirit and quick intellect that was far beyond his years.

Wood says as far as she knows, LaBarge was in good health. She believes it was a natural death, but a cause cannot be determined until results of the autopsy return in six to eight weeks.

"It's just going to take time to get all that compiled, put all the pieces together to formulate a conclusion," she said.

Funeral arrangements for LaBarge have been made at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. The funeral home website indicates the family will accept donations in lieu of flowers.
