SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Overcoming life's obstacles -- is what one Syracuse man was recognized for at the Arc of Onondaga Tuesday.

John Humprey received this year's "Joslin Outstanding Performance Award" from New York State Industries for the Disabled.

Humphrey has overcome many obstacles, including homelessness, to become a custodian at the Westcott Day Habilitation Center.

He does not drive because of his disability, so he rides his bicycle to and from work totaling more than 10 miles a day, and that includes winters.

"Coming from where I was more than 10 years ago living under a bridge, it's quite an accomplishment. It proves that once you actually have some goal in mind and you work toward it you can accomplish it,” said John Humprey, the NYSID award recipient.

And despite those harsh winters, and not having a car, Humprey has only missed one day of work in the past four years.
