UTICA, N.Y. -- A large grant is being used to help stop domestic violence.

"Kristin's Fund" honors Kristin Palumbo Longo. Kristin lost her life to domestic violence in 2009. Her sister presented a check for $50,000 to Catholic Charities of Herkimer County on Monday.

It's funding a new full-time community outreach coordinator. They'll educate schools and organizations, and promote a coordinated community response to domestic violence prevention.

Many hope this will help make a positive difference.

"We are starting to create more awareness. And an educated community is the community that is better prepared to deal with domestic violence issues," said Kristin's Fund Co-founder Gina Pearce.

Kirstin's Fund has a fundraising gala coming up on March 10 at the Turning Stone Resort Casino.
