NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi said he's against the repeal of the State and Local Tax deduction being pushed in the federal tax plan.

He said the deduction currently saves Mohawk Valley families more than $10,000 a year on average.

Brindisi was joined by some local homeowners on Monday, who said they would stand to stand to lose out if the plan moves forward.

"Both retired, on a fixed income, and with almost no debt, this tax deduction is a major financial loss for us if it goes through," said New Hartford resident Judy Jerome.

"The message to our congressional leaders is: no. Stand up for New York first," Brindisi said.

Brinidisi is trying to unseat Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

Claudia Tenney's campaign spokesman Tim Edson said, "Claudia Tenney is fighting for comprehensive, pro-growth tax reform that will leave upstate New Yorkers with more money in their wallets. From day one, Claudia Tenney has fought tireslessy against the elimination of the federal deduction for state and local taxes (SALT), and joined her NY colleagues in June to urge the Trump administration to reconsider the elimination."
