SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- With gloves and gardening tools, some in Syracuse got to work beautifying the Onondaga Creekwalk.

About 35 volunteers helped plant sunflowers and other native plants Saturday, along the trail near Armory Square.

This comes after a group cleaned up the area back in August, getting rid of garbage and weeds.

Those at the event say the goal is to make this a place for both the community and wildlife to enjoy.

"We're creating a habitat, and for people to do hands-on activities like this, it's very rewarding, it gives us an inspiration to do this sort of thing," said Sue Potrikus, OLCC community outreach coordinator.

"It's a way of giving back to the community," said volunteer Angela Thor. "I'm a medical librarian so I know that there are issues with nature deprivation, and just being able to have places for people to to go in the city to take a little breather and relax."

The creekwalk currently connects Armory Square to the southern shore of Onondaga Lake.

It will eventually connect to the Loop the Lake Trail.
