With Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time to pick out your pumpkin -- and experts say it's been a successful harvest.

Cornell's horticulture department and farmers alike say the rainy summer, combined with the warm September, created perfect growing conditions. Pumpkins are fuller and brighter this year, and that's a trend being seen throughout Central New York and the Southern Tier.

Bradley Farm in Chemung County says this year's crop is a significant improvement compared to last year.

"This summer I would say we had, I would call it an almost perfect measurable amount of rain at the right times,” said Bradley Farm’s Owner Dan Hurley. “We avoided most of the harsh thunderstorms that can damage the plants. So I'm very happy this year with what we have."

For the longest-lasting pumpkins, experts say to choose one around 25-30 pounds with no soft spots and a sturdy stem. They're best for carving, painting and, of course, eating.
