WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Watertown is a winner, and dozens of excited city officials and residents learned of the news Wednesday.

"You happen to be starting with some really great assets in Watertown that have been undeveloped for a really long time," said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The city will receive $10 million as part of the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative contest. This is the second year of the program that helps cities improve their downtown areas.

"This DRI award will help us get where we want to be," said Watertown Mayor Joseph Butler.

Watertown's 29-page proposal includes many potential projects, such as enhancing the Franklin Street Building facade.

"You tell us how to revitalize your downtown. You know your strengths, you know your assets; you tell us how to revitalize your downtown," said Cuomo.

Other projects include connecting the riverfront to the downtown area, improving walkability in downtown and increasing opportunity for businesses and artists.

"This is a great day for Watertown and a great day for the North Country," said Butler.

City officials and staff will now work to implement this investment plan.
