LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Dozens of people are taking steps to help refugees living in the Central New York area.
The first ever Run for Refugees 5K was held at Longbranch Park in Liverpool Saturday.
Organizers say they wanted to raise awareness and celebrate local refugees.
The race also raises money for InterFaith Works and services offered through its Center for New Americans.
"That's things like mental health, getting things like apartments, furniture, just think of things that you might need moving into a new area that you aren't familiar with," said Adrian Mellinger, race organizer.
Organizers hope to make the run an annual event.
