OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- A property in the town of Palermo is a source of contention between neighbors. They're concerned about an animal rescue on Hare Road.

In a complaint filed with the town, a neighbor, Pamela Collins, who's lived on the road for 26 years, says the operators of ‘Hooves, Claws and Paws’ contaminated her well water.

“We thought 'Oh, it's going to be a nice little place,' and then it wasn't 'til this past spring, or in May I got sick with a stomach and intestinal infection and was treated for that, and then a week later I was taking a shower and it [smelled] like manure,” she said.

The Oswego County SPCA and the Humane Society of the United States are also looking into allegations that the animals aren't cared for properly.

Meanwhile the people who run the rescue maintain that the animals are taken care of.

“The animals are treated with respect. We love them,” said property owner Terri Gamage. "We buy them treats. We give them toys. I’ve done research on Pinterest to see what I could do to make it so they’re not so bored."

The Oswego County SPCA plans to tour the premises with a veterinarian next week.
