The men's varsity rowing team at Colgate University is being suspended for multiple competitions after violations of the university's policies on alcohol and hazing.

The team has been suspended for all fall competitions, as well as the first competition of the spring season.

The team will also not be alllowed to compete in the postseason.

All team members must undergo mandatory education about hazing prevention and high-risk alcohol use.

"Hazing in any form is inimical to Colgate’s values. It is also illegal. Hazing has been shown, in many studies, to not be effective in building bonds, creating community, or eliciting loyalty," said Colgate Vice President Paul McLoughlin II. "Rather, organizations that foster a sense of belonging and accountability have the most loyal and committed members – and perform at higher levels."
