Poughkeepsie and Dutchess County leaders say the city has lost a hero.

US Navy Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Corey George Ingram was one of the sailors killed when the USS McCain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore.

"He gave his life in service to his country. I think we often forget the risk that these men and women take every day," said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.

Ingram's parents also understand what it means to give back to their communty. Poughkeepsie City Mayor Rob Rolison says Ingram's father is a Master Sergeant at Stewart. The county executive says Ingram's mother works for the county.

With the announcement the sailor's remains have been found, local leaders say it's important to share a message.

"We as a city, we want them to know how we feel ... about them, about Corey, about the sacrifice he made just being a member of the Navy, putting himself in harm's way, and that the city is there for them," said Rolison.

Flags are lowered at half-staff this week in his honor, and when Ingram's memorial services start, flags in the county will be lowered again.
