HERKIMER, N.Y. -- Two people were rescued after flames tore through a building on Main Street in Herkimer on Tuesday. Some of the 27 tenants displaced by the fire in Herkimer were allowed back in on Wednesday to get any belongings they could find.
Firefighters say the call came in after 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The second and third floors were on fire.
A bucket was used to get the two people inside out. Nobody was injured.
Officials say more than 10 dogs and several cats had to be rescued. Some dogs and cats died, but some other animals were found alive including a rabbit, snake and lizard.
One resident is thanking firefighters for saving at least some of her family's cats.
"You're lost without them, you know? I'm still missing my Siamese one. He's only five months old so I'm looking for him," said Carrie Dygert, one of the victims.
Herkimer Fire Chief John Spanfelner says that the response went well.
"They went in it, did an exterior hit on it, knocked it down good, and finished it up with the aerials," said Herkimer Fire Chief John Spanfelner. "Everything went well."
The fire department says the building is inhabitable due to smoke and water damage. The business inside the building is also closed.
The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but the fire department does not believe it was suspicious.
