SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse family is dealing with tragedy after the death of a two-year-old girl.

"It's been really heavy hearted, heartbreaking," said Jameisha Stanford's grandmother, Tracy Snow. "I really miss my 'Meish.' "

Just two years old, Jameisha's family members are now faced with saying goodbye after a death that left them shocked.

"Oh my god, not my 'Meishy,' " Snow said. "They took my 'Meishy' from me."

Jameisha died from her injuries in a hit-and-run Saturday afternoon. Police said a driver lost control of the car, hitting Jameisha and her younger brother and father.

"It happened so quick," Jameisha's father, James, said. "It hit all three of us. I tried my best to help her, save her, but I couldn't do anything."

Jamiesha's father and brother are physically OK after the hit-and-run, but their pain runs deep.

"When she comes over on the weekend to visit me and her mom, she wakes me up every morning, 'Daddy, let's go do this; let's go do that,' and that makes me happy," James said. "But I can't do that anymore, because she's not here to wake me up."

Those memories will forever linger.

"She was a very lovable girl, always smiling, always cheerful, [wanting] to help out, want to clean, take care of her brothers," Snow said.

"She's a princess," James said. "Comes, plays around with everybody, play with the community, the kids on the block."

The 400 block of Shonnard Street is now a memorial to Jameisha. Candles, balloons and stuffed animals line the scene of the hit-and-run that took her life.

"She always will be in my heart, no matter where she's at," Snow said.

Officials are still looking for the driver of the car. Police describe him as a Hispanic male in his 20s, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall.

The Stanford family is asking for donations to help cover the costs of the funeral. Calling hours will be held Thursday, with the funeral service Friday at St. Lucy's Church on Gifford Street. Contributions should be made out to DeWitt Memorial Funeral Home at 4612 South Salina Street.
