SANDY POND, N.Y. -- Despite some dealing with the effects of Lake Ontario flooding for well over a month, it's still much too early to start the cleanup.

It could be weeks before water drops enough that future damage isn't a concern. But it's not too early to get a jump start on plans.

SERVPRO of Jefferson County is one company that's starting to take calls from home and business owners. It cleans up water damage, the mold left behind and more. It says people should call a company they trust or has good references and make contact soon -- because if you wait too long, you could end up waiting a long time.

"Especially this weekend, when a lot of people are coming up for the first time and seeing what's going on," said SERVPRO of Jefferson County Owner Mark Zegarelli. "I think phones should be ringing off the hook. Again, unfortunately, it's a situation where we have to wait until the water recedes. You can't fight Mother Nature, because you're going to lose."

Governor Andrew Cuomo is also warning people to be on the look out for companies that pop up and/or overcharge for services as this event goes on. The governor is asking residents to report suspected price gouging to the Lake Ontario Flood Assistance Hotline at 866-244-3839.
