Herkimer police responded to two separate child endangerment calls Wednesday.

Around 8:40 in the morning police were called to the 600 block of North Main Street for a report of a toddler walking in the street in only a diaper.

Police say a resident was able to safely recover the child. Officials say 64-year-old Mary Carol Aiello was supposed to be watching the child and failed to provide adequate supervision.

Officials say the child was wandering for about an hour. Aiello is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Then at approximately 11 a.m. police responded to a separate incident.

A National Grid employee reported that a child was sitting on a second-story window sill and there was no screen in the window.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that 25-year-old Derrick Preston left the child unsupervised.

He is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The Department of Social Services assisted Herkimer police in both of these cases.
