ILION, N.Y. -- A total of 122 people have been laid off from the Remington Arms plant in Ilion.

Ilion Mayor Terry Leonard says he learned of the news Wednesday. He was told that the layoffs are not related to any legislation like the SAFE Act, but rather the result of slow sales.

Leonard says this is not unique to the company, and often happens in the manufacturing industry.

"From my experience when I worked there sales would drop very low for periods of time then they would come back up. It could be a reflection of the economy of the time, things going on at the national and state levels, but the market would go up and down," said Leonard.

Leonard says he's hopeful that when sales go back up the company will rehire those who are being laid off.

Less than 1,000 people are now employed at the facility.
