UTICA, N.Y. -- When first responders were sent to Humphrey Gardens Apartments Monday night they were called to assist an unresponsive female. When they arrived, they found 44-year-old Irene Williams stabbed to death.

Her daughter, 24-year-old Tasheonia Hills, was a person of interest.

"Shortly after we arrived, we received information from dispatch that Tasheonia had contacted 911 and that she would be responding back to the scene," said Bryan Coromato, a lieutenant with the Utica Police.

When she arrived, Hills was apprehended and questioned by investigators. Police believe the incident started as an argument that turned violent.

"When she was taken into custody and transported to the police department yesterday, she was completely cooperative with us. Her demeanor has changed since then," said Coromato.

Police say they do not know what caused her to suddenly become uncooperative.

By Tuesday afternoon, Hills was charged with second degree murder.

"She hasn't cooperated with the process of being booked, which would include taking her fingerprints and photographs and things like that," said Coromato.

During her arraignment, she was belligerent to the Utica City Court judge. She claimed her rights had been violated and that she didn't understand why she was being detained. Despite the judge's attempts to explain, Hills continued to interrupt him.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are still working to determine the murder weapon and the exact motive.

Hills is scheduled to be back in Utica City Court on Friday for a felony hearing. She is being held in the Oneida County Jail without bail.
