SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Icon Tower building will be opening to renters in just a few weeks. There are plenty of luxury amenities inside, but what about your basic necessities? Where can you find your morning coffee, the gym and most importantly, groceries?

"When you live in a city, usually everything is right near you, you don't really need a car," said local Stephen Paoli, who relies on the bus to get around.

You won't need a car to find a spot for coffee. There's a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Cafe Kubal all within walking distance of the new apartments on South Warren Street. You'll have similar luck finding a place to work out, with a few different gym options on Jefferson and Salina Streets.

"If you want to go out to a bar or coffee shop or something, I think it's certainly walkable. There's all those resources in downtown Syracuse,” said Syracuse resident Beth Scanlon.

So you've got your morning coffee and gym all on one block, but to get those groceries, you'll have to get yourself some wheels. Some of the closest stores are along Erie Boulevard, you could hop on the 68 bus, but make sure to leave some extra time, that route only runs once every 90 minutes on the weekend.

"Transportation runs different each day,” Paoli said. “I mean during the week it's not too bad, but on the weekends if you need to get somewhere, busses don't come till every like 45 minutes so you have to sit there and wait."

"I don't have a car so I ask some of my roommates for a ride if I need to go to the grocery store,” said another Syracuse resident Emily Prill.

Aside from downtown convenience stores, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes by bus to get to the nearest chain stores on Erie Boulevard or West Genesee Streets. Which is something residents say isn't going to work if they're paying anywhere between $1,200 to $2,700 per month for downtown rent.

"Well I don't really want to pay $2,000 when there's nothing around where I'm living and I can't get where I need to go,” said Paoli. “Obviously you need food and groceries in the house and you need to get to work and stuff like that. But I don't want to pay all that money when there's nothing around, when it's not convenient enough."

Of course, people can choose to live and keep a car downtown, monthly parking rates at covered garages range from $60 to $125.
