DEWITT, N.Y. -- A new community library will soon be popping up in the Dewitt area.

Officials broke ground on the $8.3 million library Friday.

The current library, located in Shoppingtown Mall, is too small and not fully ADA compliant.

The new location on Jamesville Road will be about double the size and easily accessible from the area's main highways.

The library will include a community room, a cafe and large digital production lab.

"One of the things that we really love about this new space is that we have planned it so that it's very flexible," library executive director Wendy Scott said. "So as people's interests and needs change, as technology changes, we can make changes in the library so that it's sustainable and efficient and we can do more with the space that we have."

The library has begun a $1 million capital campaign to help raise money for the project.

So far, $400,000 has been donated.

The library is expected to open August of 2017.
