CICERO, N.Y. -- Firefighters in Cicero were hard at work on Wednesday, demonstrating some of the life-saving measures they use when they get the call.

It was part of the annual RecruitNY firefighter recruitment initiative. It's a statewide effort to increase the number of volunteers.

Cicero town councilor Mike Becallo's life changed when he attended an event just like this one.

"I get the opportunity to be on both sides, which is awesome.  When I came out a couple years ago, I actually came out for RecruitNY just to let everyone know who I was. I wound up joining that day.  It was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.  So, as a volunteer firefighter, I want to say, you never have to thank me for anything that we do.  And, I'm sure everybody behind me said the same thing.  We love what we do. It is fun to do. Helping people is the best part about what we do.  And, l will tell you, the most fun thing is being able to ride out on those engines.  I'm sure we can all agree on that one," said Mike Becallo, Cicero town councilor and firefighter.

Fire departments across the state are inviting the public to attend one of their many upcoming open houses to learn more about becoming a volunteer.
