CENTRAL, N.Y. -- While many people are giving loved ones flowers and candy, there's something bigger to consider giving on Valentine's Day.

February 14th is also National Donor Day.

According to the New York Alliance for Donation more than 1,500 New Yorker's receive organs every year but there are still thousands more on waiting lists.

They also say that each organ donor can save up to eight lives.

Sullivan County Treasurer Nancy Buck saved her bosses life when she donated her kidney back in 2008 -- she says it's important for more New Yorker's to make sure they are registered as donors.

"The purpose of it is in New York State we are second from the bottom for registered donors and we really are trying hard to bring that number up so that people can survive," Buck said.

According to the state website, only 24 percent of New Yorkers age 18 and over are registered as organ donors.
