ITHACA, N.Y. -- Monday marked the beginning of the third and final phase of construction at Ithaca Commons.

The reconstruction project started in 2013 and is designed to make the Commons a better place for people to walk, shop, and enjoy downtown Ithaca.

Work was supposed to be finished in 2014, but there were some major delays along the way.

Some of those included the Simeon's restaurant crash, the early snow, and underground issues.

With all the work underground completed, all that's left is the work on the surface.

"And now what's happening is the concrete is being poured and the pavers are going in and all the amenities and all the beautiful attractions that are going to be part of the new Commons will be taking shape," said Downtown Ithaca Alliance executive director Gary Ferguson.

Officials say the work could be done by the middle of the summer.

A grand opening celebration is being planned for the end of August.
