State University of New York Chancellor Jim Malatras announced on Friday a new SUNY-wide policy regarding COVID-19 safety protocols and standards violations.

The new standards are aimed at strengthening penalties for what SUNY called "reckless behavior and non-compliance," in a press release.

Student violators will now face immediate academic and housing suspension, and possible dismissal. Student organizations that are found to be in non-compliance will also face a permanent campus ban.

SUNY says the policy is designed to help campuses protect the public health of students, faculty, staff, and community members, and work to ensure that campuses can remain open during the pandemic.

Infractions include intentional violations of COVID-positive students, failure to self-isolate and/or quarantine, prohibited on-campus or off-campus gathering, violations of face mask and social distancing requirements, and failure to comply with contact tracing and campus health protocols

The policy becomes effective on campuses no later than October 1.
