The story startled many in the Southern Tier: an infant allegedly left for dead in a trash bag in Elmira.
Friday, the mother was back in city court.
Harriette Hoyt, 17, waived her preliminary hearing. She showed no emotion in court, staring ahead and occasionally rolling her eyes.
Hoyt faces attempted murder in the second degree.
Prosecutors say neighbors found her eight-month-old girl in a garbage back, left in the bushes for more than three days.
Hoyt's bail was lowered to $125,000, and she agreed not to leave the state. Her attorney had a message for people following the case.
"There's just a lot to the story that I hope eventually comes out. I don't believe she is the monster she is sometimes being painted as," said public advocate John Brennan. "Everyone needs to remember she's a 17-year-old single mother, and what she's accused of is a very horrible thing. But it's also a very traumatic thing for any 17-year-old to go through."
Her attorney also says that Hoyt is happy that her daughter is OK.
Now the case will shift to Chemung County Court.
