Fifteen-year-old Loindale Johnson was shot on Coolidge Avenue and died a short time later at the hospital.
The city school district is offering counseling to classmates.
Local groups like the V.O.I.C.E Project are providing support as well, trying to come up with strategies to protect children.
"They'll be the next leaders, they'll be the next mayor, the next teachers, the next clergy, the next educators," said Colette Matthews-Carter, said local pastor and V.O.I.C.E member. "We want to make sure that they're safe and that they're healthy, and that our communities are safe and healthy. So, we just can't do nothing."
One idea is to get students more invoved in afterschool activities.
