ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A man is being treated for burns at the hospital Thursday morning after firefighters say he tried to put out a fire by himself.

Rochester firefighters were called to Clifford Avenue near North Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from a home.

Firefighters say that neighbor alerted the homeowner, who then went back inside and tried to put out the flames himself.

Firefighters say it appears he suffered second degree burns to his face. They're hoping people will learn from this incident and let firefighters do their job.

"Get out of the structure make the phone call and we'll take over from there," said RFD Batallion Chief Mike Dupree. "I think its that initial shock — people get stressed out and think they got to take care of it. Emotions take over and they make the wrong decision."

Dupre says the fire was confined to a mattress in a bedroom and the home is still livable.

No one else was injured.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
