LYONS, N.Y. — The Seneca Falls mother and stepfather accused of killing their toddler were arraigned on Thursday.

Charges against Alison and Donald Bovio were upgraded to include murder after Alison's son died at a Syracuse hospital. In total they have been charged with three counts of second degree murder, two counts of first degree manslaughter, second degree manslaughter and reckless assault of a child. They each pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Three-year old Panagiotis Vacchino was known as "Peter." Police say the Bovios beat the child hard enough to cause a brain bleed. He was taken off of life support last week.

Prosecutors say Peter was hit with a belt, causing his head to hit a hard floor.

Police say the child sustained abuse long before the Bovios called police saying Peter had fallen down a flight of stairs.

The toddler's biological father traveled to Syracuse and was with Peter in the hospital before his death.

Donald remains jailed with bail set at $400,000 cash or $800,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 14. Alison is also being held on the same bail amounts. No court return date for her has been scheduled at this time.
