The deadly shooting of a 16-year-old in Chenango County appears to be a "horrible tragedy", said state police investigating.

Around 9:15 a.m. Friday, the victim and another 16-year-old were at a location on County Route 35 in Guilford. Troopers said a .22 caliber hunting rifle, which was loaded, was bobbled and fired. The teen holding the gun didn't know it was loaded, said state police.

The 16-year-old was shot in the head, and pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation continues, but state police reaffirm that the shooting appears accidental.
