HERKIMER, N.Y. -- A massive fire destroyed a building at the Herkimer Diamond Mines. No one was hurt, but some campers woke up Saturday to sounds of sirens and the glow of flames across the road.

"I had a cabin. The back of it is pretty much facing the road over there and saw this nice orange glow, and I thought it was a good morning sunrise, but as I opened it up, there was this blaze," said Zachary Mosher, a camper from Pennsylvania.

"I kept hearing them and hearing them so about, I don't know, maybe, five, six minutes I finally got up and I looked, raised the shade and it was like totally, fully engulfed," said Pam Allen, a camper from Herkimer.

The Herkimer Diamond Mines owner said the business will go on, and the mines are still open. The building that was on fire was the store and museum, which are difficult to replace.

"They had a cluster of diamonds in there that looked like a cross that she told me they found on the day of 9/11, about the time the second tower went down is when they found that cluster. She had jewelry downstairs, stones for sale downstairs. I wouldn't even want to imagine to guess the price of what was lost," said Middleville Fire Chief Roger Hensley.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
