Included in this year's state budget negotiations is a debate over criminal justice reform, and the governor's plan to end cash bail for most defendants. Cuomo argues the current system keeps low-income people locked up without being convicted of a crime, and says the money spent on keeping them in jail could be better spent elsewhere. Now advocates are working to build support in the legislature. That includes my next guest, who got involved in politics after the death of his brother. Kalief Browder committed suicide after spending three years at Rikers Island awaiting trial for allegedly stealing a backpack, an accusation he denied. You may remember the case was also one of the driving factors in the Raise the Age push. Joining us to talk more about the potential impact of ending cash bail is Akeem Browder.
