ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — With Sunday's big playoff game in Jacksonville inching closer, injured running back LeSean McCoy is showing some improvement, but questions still remain.

Thursday's practice was the first look at Shady since he was carted off the field Sunday in Miami. McCoy, who was just out for the stretching portion of practice, continues to progress with an ankle injury.

“It’s been feeling a lot better, I’m out of the boot. I can walk around without any pain, so that’s a plus,” McCoy said.

McCoy says he's using a combination of rest and test and is encouraged that he still has a few days left to recover. Still, there's certain steps he needs to take to feel comfortable suiting up.

“I just want to be able to cut well enough where I don’t feel a lot of pain when I’m cutting,” McCoy said. "I just want to be as close to 100 percent as I can get, but a type of game like this, you have to lay it all on the line. If I can’t get to 100 percent, as long as I can get out there, and run effectively enough, I’ll do it,”

McCoy's words seem encouraging, but that doesn't mean he's for sure at least going to try and give it a go. Certainly Shady wants to play in what would be just his fourth career playoff game, but he's pulling from an experience down in Miami just a year ago as guidance to trust his body.

“I don’t want to make any promises. A lot of my teammates have been asking me the same questions, and I don’t want to lie to them,” McCoy said. “People who know me, know I want to be out there. I’ve been in situations like this before here — played on bad ankle, bad foot, actually bad hamstring — and I didn’t do well at all. It kind of hurt us. I don’t want to be in that same situation.”

A situation he's been in before, but a situation this franchise hasn't experienced in nearly two decades.
