A student at Horseheads High School tested positive for exposure to tuberculosis, according to a letter sent home by the district.

While officials say there is no public health risk, all areas where the student may have been were cleaned and disinfected, including buses, classrooms and specific parts of the high school.

Tuberculosis is spread through the air, but the bacteria lives for only a short period of time. According to the Centers for Disease Control, only those with active TB disease can spread the bacteria to others, and many people who contract TB infection never develop the disease.

Superintendent Thomas Douglas is encouraging anyone with concerns to contact their local doctor, or the Chemung County Health Department.
