A woman is being treated for burns and smoke inhalation after a fire in an Alabama apartment Tuesday morning.

Firefighters believe the fire might have been started by a candle burning in the lower apartment of a building on Judge Road. They were able to put out the fire before it spread to other units.

"It was a combination of a quick response and the homeowner did the right thing, they closed the door upon exiting the apartment and it primarily kept it confined to their apartment,” said Chief Gary Patnode of the Alabama Fire Department. “The fire was oxygen deprived upon going in there, it pretty much burned itself out."

A dog died in the fire and firefighters were able to rescue at least one cat.
