This week’s Spectrum News Scholar Athlete of the Week is Kelsey Chmiel.

Chimel is a senior at Saratoga Springs High School this fall. She has a lengthy track record as a runner and academic.

She is a 12-time All-American and Scholar Athlete in cross country and track. The senior has a long list of accolades.

Kelsey was ranked as the top junior in the nation in 2017, competing in the Cross Country National Championship three times; finishing fourth, fifth and second. She was a national champion in the 2-mile at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

She was also the first American to win the International Junior Cross Country Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland. The senior was a cross country state champion in 2016, and runner up in 2017. She also was the state and federation champion in the 3,000-meter two years in a row. She was also the 3,000-meter champion and meet record holder at the New York Relay and Eddy Meet, two years running.

Kelsey was a member of the winning distance medley relay team at the Penn Relays. She was a member of the All-American distance medley and 4-mile relay teams. Kelsey also won the New Balance Gran Prix mile in Boston.

In the classroom, Kelsey has a 99.49 GPA and will have taken 10 AP course by the time she graduates.

Chmiel will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
