Soon after President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Mexico on a preliminary accord to replace NAFTA, but leaving Canada in limbo, North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik called the conceptual agreement with Mexico encouraging

But, the two-term congresswoman said it is vital the U.S. continue efforts to reach a positive agreement with Canada as well.

New York has added 2.7 million new jobs since NAFTA took effect in 1994, according to Stefanik.

"During my visits with businesses and families across our district, it is clear that uncertainty over NAFTA is already having real consequences for our region and these will only grow if a conceptual agreement with Canada is not reached soon," she said.

The Republican faces a re-election fight this fall against Democrat Tedra Cobb in New York's 21st Congressional District.
