New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a new lawsuit against President Trump on Tuesday in Midtown.

The suit is designed to block the Trump administration from demanding citizenship information in the 2020 Census.

Schneiderman says the question undermines the census and creates fear and unrest.

"Decade after decade, census officials have said very clearly that simply asking about immigration status will create an environment of fear and mistrust in immigrant communities, communities of color," the Attorney General said. "Dating back to 1980, when the Census Bureau was asked to add a question on citizen status, they rejected it. And they stated, and I'm gonna quote them, 'any effort to ascertain citizenship will inevitably jeopardize the overall accuracy of the population count.'"

That question has not been asked on a census survey since the 1950s.

The Commerce Department says the question is being added to help protect minority voting rights.

The Census Bureau counts the total number of people in the country — not the total number of citizens.

Many lawmakers are concerned undocumented immigrants fearing deportation won't respond.
