Ecologists, biologists and state officials from across New York are coming together to fight the growing problem of algae blooms in ponds and lakes in the Empire State.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says four regional summits over the next six weeks will focus on pre-existing blooms and efforts being used to prevent new ones as part of his $65 million initiative to battle blooms.

The blooms can affect water quality and are seen as a threat to recreational opportunities and tourism.

Summits are scheduled for New Paltz, Syracuse, Ticonderoga and Rochester, and will be open to the public.
