ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's not just the dangerous "Tide Pod Challenge" that has New York state lawmakers calling for new safety packaging and labeling for laundry pods.
While this comes after teens on social media began ingesting Tide Pods, bringing the so-called challenge from social media into the headlines, the lawmakers are concerned young children and people who suffer from dementia may genuinely mistake the pods for candy.
"This truly is the Tide Pod Challenge. The challenge is for government, for regulators and for the industry to step up and correct these dangerous devices," said state Sen. Brad Hoylman, D-Manhattan.
The lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require safety labeling on Tide Pods and child-resistant openings. They've also written to Proctor & Gamble, the company that owns the Tide brand, to change how the detergent is packaged.
